As a survivor of intimate partner abuse and stalking I am unfortunately all too familiar with the myriad ways that trauma can negatively impact your life. For years I struggled with denial, fear, anxiety, despair, isolation, anger, grief, and shame. I did everything I could to avoid facing my trauma and dealing with it because I thought I should be able to just get over it and move on. I didn’t think I deserved to feel how I felt, but as the saying goes, “what you resists persists.”
Instead of getting over my trauma I ultimately just prolonged my suffering. I didn’t seek help until a mental breakdown caused me to hit rock bottom. As painful as that experience was I am grateful for it because it forced me to stop living in denial and ask for help. I began seeing a therapist and was diagnosed with PTSD, which gave me the knowledge and language I needed to understand and talk about what I was experiencing.
After a couple months of therapy I decided to quit my job as an engineer, sell most of my belongings, and move into a camper. I spent the next year traveling around the US in search of solitude and healing. It was an incredible journey, both physically and spiritually, and it was during that time of wandering that the seed for Being Tree was planted.
Since then I have gone from being a participant in a domestic violence support group, to volunteering as a facilitator of my own DV support group, to starting a business as a Trauma and Grief coach. The journey to this point has been long and difficult, but it has been incredibly transformative and to be honest I wouldn’t change any of it if I could. The trauma I experienced may have shattered my life, but it also gave me the opportunity to create a new one that is more meaningful and authentic.
I can tell you from my own experience that there is a better life on the other side of trauma and grief, but it requires hard work and dedication to get there. I can’t do the work for you, but I can help guide you along the way. Will you take that journey with me?
